Position Overview

The Beautification Coordinator will assist the Landscape Manager in overseeing the beautification program of the City, overseeing inmate labor, operating the greenhouse, supervising personnel, assisting with designing, installing landscaping, and maintaining irrigation systems.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist Landscape Manager in designing healthy and well‑maintained gardens and grounds to create a positive first impression.
  • Provide supervision to the beautification crew.
  • Organize and plan daily maintenance operations.
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of landscaped areas such as grading property; install lighting or irrigation systems; build walkways, terraces, and fountains.
  • Supervise the transportation and planting of new vegetation.
  • Oversee mulch transplant, fertilization, and watering of flowering plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Follow up on work orders, citizen complaints/requests, and determine solutions to correct any arising problems.
  • Assist in conducting and preparing quarterly and annual employee performance evaluations.
  • Maintain city equipment and inventory.
  • Schedule work for crew according to weather conditions, equipment availability, and seasonal limitations.
  • Inspect work of beautification crew to assess quality.
  • Review completed work orders for quality of work performed.
  • Oversee mixing and application of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides through sprays, dusts, vapors, or soil treatments.
  • Prepare fields, garden beds or lawn areas by cultivating soil and adding fertilizers and compost.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of applied chemicals; follow all federal laws and train employees on proper spraying techniques.
  • Ensure employees are not wasteful or careless with chemical applications.
  • Act as coordinator between Landscape Manager and assigned projects.
  • Maintain detailed reports regarding all work scheduled and completed.
  • Conduct meetings with citizens, business owners, or community organizations to convey project designs and solicit information.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Apply basic professional knowledge to design of simple or complex landscaping construction management.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Review project work performed by beautification crew.
  • Assist other personnel in reviewing quantities, costs, accuracy of specifications, completeness, constructability, and coordinate with other professions.
  • Present information one‑on‑one or in small group settings to city employees.
  • Communicate effectively with all city employees, public officials, and citizens.
  • Technically supervise crews performing contracted work, providing special services, testing, inspections, and beautification staff support.
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred, with six to eight years related experience and/or training in horticulture or landscape architecture; five to seven years supervisory experience.

Required Licenses or Certificates

Valid Mississippi driver’s license.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50+ pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Tasks involve sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and potentially loud noise.
