National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP)

Role Overview

The Clinician for La Jornada works to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth by providing assessments, counseling, advocacy, mental‑Health stabilization and support toward the goal of unification with a sponsor family.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct trauma‑informed mental‑health assessments, referrals and safety planning (human trafficking, risk, UC, RST, post‑18 out plans).
  • Provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, family sessions and child‑facing services on‑site.
  • Maintain an active clinical caseload and meet established service‑delivery thresholds.
  • Facilitate community‑based services, including travel to foster caregivers’ homes and community partners.
  • Complete care‑plan documentation, legal forms and required training promptly.
  • Collaborate with the cross‑functional team, stakeholders and external agencies for coordinated care.
  • Assist in orientation of children in care and support foster caregivers as needed.
  • Travel as required for community outreach, up to 25–30% of time for out‑of‑state trips.
  • Coordinate and monitor medical, educational, psychological and social services in the community.
Qualifications
  • Master’s or doctorate in psychology, social work, counseling, marriage & family counseling, or related behavioral discipline (clinical experience required).
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure (non‑licensed staff must be on working path and attain licensure within 3 years of hire).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency.
  • Proficient with desktop/laptop, internet, databases, telephony and common software (Word, Excel, etc).
  • Willingness to work flexible, non‑traditional hours and be on call nights/weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to organize, travel, and escort youth to various destinations; out‑of‑state travel 25–30% of time.
  • Minimum auto insurance coverage of $100,000/300,000 bodily liability.
  • 21 years of age, valid state driver’s license, reliable vehicle, good driving record.

  • Adherence to ORR, CDC, and state COVID‑19 protocols.
  • Capacity for flexibility and responsiveness to youth, foster caregivers, system partners and stakeholders.
Physical Demands
  • Manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Repetitive motion, prolonged sitting and standing, sustained visual and mental focus.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lb, bending, pulling, carrying.
  • Frequent travel and driving for extended periods, as program needs dictate.
  • Reasonable accommodation available for individuals with disabilities.
