- Position Title: School Van Driver
Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, this position of a School Van Driver is to ensure the safe, timely, and secure transportation of students to and from school. This includes adhering to traffic laws, following designated routes, maintaining a safe driving environment, ensuring students are properly seated and supervised, and being vigilant to prevent accidents or incidents during transit.
The driver contributes to creating a positive and disciplined environment to ensure the safety and well‑being of students during the trip.
- License:
- Required - Valid State of Illinois Driver's License, School Bus Permit (SBP) with Passenger endorsement issued by the State of Illinois.
- Preferred - Valid State of Illinois Driver's License, School Bus Permit (SBP) with Passenger endorsement issued by the State of Illinois, and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Education: Required - High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience:
- Required - A minimum of three (3) years' experience driving a vehicle with an excellent driving record. Must successfully complete the State or DOT medical examination, pass federally mandated drug and alcohol screening, and completion of background checks prior to starting employment.
- Preferred - A minimum of three (3) years' experience driving a school van or school bus with an excellent driving record. Must successfully complete the State or DOT medical examination, pass federally mandated drug and alcohol screening, and completion of background checks prior to starting employment.
- Observes all mandatory Federal, State and local safety laws/regulations for school buses.
- Performs all required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and complete all applicable forms.
- Maintains order among students on a school van.
- Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
- Maintains a seating chart for each route.
- Communicates with parents, as needed, based on route assignments and maintain effective communication with students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders concerning all responsibilities related to the school van driver role.
- Obeys all traffic laws.
- Performs basic first aid and CPR as appropriate and maintains awareness of individual medical alerts as they pertain to the students on their bus.
- Always maintains student discipline and immediately reports all behavior problems to the Transportation Department.
- Works effectively with students of different grade levels, abilities, or program placements.
- Transports only authorized students.
- Picks up students only at authorized stops.
- Discharges students only at authorized stops.
- Reports all accidents and completes all required reports.
- Exercises responsible leadership when on in‑district or out‑of‑district charters.
- Always punctual. Maintains assigned schedule of routes.
- Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State of Illinois or school district.
- Complies with all procedures and policies established by the Board of Education and the Woodland School District Department of Transportation.
- Serves as a back‑up School Bus Driver, if holds a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Attends all required meetings as directed.
- Cleans and services the school van or bus to include interior cleaning, exterior vehicle washing, installation of fuel, verification of oil and other fluids as directed.
- Reports, in writing, all mechanical failures or problems the same day as observed.
