Overview

Medical Laboratory Scientist II - Flow Cytometry is a hospital-based position at HUMC in Hackensack, NJ. This role reports to Quest Diagnostics and supports flow cytometry testing within the clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities
  • Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity with independent judgment in designated specialties.
  • Provide support to the department in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform and report assigned analytical tests in accordance with SOPs, ensuring applicable quality control requirements are met.
  • Adhere to laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain turnaround times, including STATS or critical results to clients, per analytical schedules.
  • Verify reagent/test kit received, opened, and expiration dates where applicable.
  • Perform and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make QC decisions regarding assay disposition.
  • Inform supervisory personnel of problems related to test procedures and cooperate with investigations of deviations from standard procedures.
  • Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized physician reports.
  • Maintain safe, functional, and sanitary laboratory areas and equipment.
  • Complete training and competency checklists; may assist supervisor with training of other personnel.
  • Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements; use PPE and engineering/work practice controls as directed.
  • Answer questions from clients or lab personnel as applicable; participate in government or regulatory inspections as needed.
  • May assume lead responsibilities in supervisor's absence if qualified and delegated.

Qualifications

Required

Work Experience:

One (1) year full-time experience or training (high complexity testing) in a clinical laboratory setting.

Preferred

Work Experience:

Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with most current year in present department.

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry objects; varied weights as described in job expectations.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods; frequent walking/standing.
  • Use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments requiring manual dexterity.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in designated specialty; familiarity with departmental policies and procedures.
  • BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology, or an Associates degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
  • Foreign-educated candidates must provide credential evaluation; U.S.

    -educated candidates must provide transcripts.
  • Other state-specific requirements may apply depending on state testing certifications. Check with local HR or QA.
Skills
  • Proven leadership, problem-solving, and independent work capabilities; ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills for interactions with supervisors, colleagues, and clients.
  • Confidential handling of client information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Laboratory Information Systems.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred):
    Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry.
  • Associate’s Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (Preferred).
Licenses/Certifications
  • ASCP Certification (Preferred).
