Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Bethnal Green South
We are working with a supportive mainstream primary school in Bethnal Green to recruit a dedicated and highly committed 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a young boy in Reception with severe autism and an EHCP.
The pupil is beyond non-verbal and has significant sensory needs. He is currently transitioning into school and is attending for limited hours with parental support. Over the next three to four weeks, he will gradually transition into full-time education, with parental support reducing during this period.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting this transition and in establishing structure, routines, resources and appropriate interventions to support the pupil’s learning, emotional regulation, and wellbeing.
The pupil is not yet toilet trained and is currently undergoing this transition, therefore applicants must be comfortable supporting with personal care.
This is a long-term, full-time role starting immediately and running until July, with strong potential to continue into the next academic year. If the pupil transitions into specialist provision in the future, there is potential for a long-term position within the school in another capacity, subject to performance.
During periods where the pupil is not in school, the successful candidate will support with preparation, resource development, and may assist in other year groups and classes.
Key Responsibilities
Providing consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day
Supporting the pupil’s transition into full-time education
Implementing sensory, communication, and behavioural strategies
Supporting emotional regulation and engagement
Assisting with personal care and toileting
Creating and adapting visual and learning resources
Working closely with the SENCo, teachers, parents, and external professionals
Monitoring progress and contributing to reviews
Person Specification
Applicants should have experience supporting children with severe autism and non-verbal communication needs. A strong understanding of sensory processing and inclusive practice is essential.
We are looking for someone who is calm, patient, resilient, and highly committed. The successful candidate must be reliable, proactive, and confident working independently within a 1:1 setting.
Previous experience in SEND, autism units, specialist provision, or complex needs settings is highly desirable
