Visitor Services Operatives carry out bilingual fee collection and visitor orientation duties, run modern exhibits and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre, and participate in and support interpretive programs and demonstrations. They work at both the Halifax Citadel and Georges Island National Historic Sites, and collaborate closely with many of the Halifax Citadel Society’s partner organizations at both sites.
Duties & Responsibilities
Operate kiosks, process entrance fees for visitors and groups, and maintain a cash float.
Operate modern exhibits and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre.
Distribute brochures and provide bilingual visitor reception and orientation services.
Deliver, participate in, and/or support interpretive programming and demonstrations.
Address visitors’ concerns and collect and record visitors’ comments and other feedback.
Monitor visitors’ adherence to site rules, regulations, and safety practices.
Carry out basic inspections of visitor areas, report maintenance issues, and conduct basic maintenance/cleaning tasks of work spaces.
Clean selected visitor facilities at Georges Island NHS.
Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
Education
A high school diploma (or GED) is required.
Experience
Previous experience in a customer service role is an asset.
Previous experience with cash handling and/or point of sale systems is an asset.
Language
The ability to communicate fluently in both English and French is required.
Skills & Abilities
The ability to work efficiently as part of a team, both independently and in small groups.
The ability to interact and communicate with members of the public in an efficient, friendly, and professional manner.
Conditions of Employment
Willingness to wear HCS uniforms and adhere to associated personal appearance standards.
Willingness to travel between work locations on foot and in small boats, and to work in semi‑isolated locations with limited infrastructure.
Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance.
Working Conditions
Work indoors in admission kiosks, modern visitor exhibits, and the Halifax Citadel’s Information Centre.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, standing for long periods of time, at the Halifax Citadel and on Georges Island.
Work inside historic fortifications in both period‑accurate and modern spaces.
Work a variable schedule including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or overtime as required.
