Department: Earth Science Type of Employment: Permanent, Full-Time Group Affiliation: SMUFU, Rank of Lecturer The Department of Earth Science at Saint Mary's University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer Stream faculty position at the rank of Lecturer, effective July 1st, 2026. The successful candidate will be eligible to apply for promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer and permanence (Lecturer Stream equivalent of tenure) after a minimum of 5 years as per the Saint Mary's University Faculty Union Collective Agreement.

The Department of Earth Science hosts seven research and teaching faculty (including a CRC II chair), two full-time technicians, as well as multiple professors emeriti, part-time faculty, adjunct professors, and postdoctoral fellows. We offer both undergraduate and graduate (MSc and PhD) degree programs, encouraging research initiatives and teaching pedagogies that enhance the diversity of opportunities, experiences, and learning outcomes for our students.
To support excellence in teaching, our department hosts museum-quality sample collections, a thin section preparation/lapidary lab, two microscope labs, two general geoscience teaching labs, and industry-grade software (e.g., Petrel, Arc Pro, Geochemists Workbench) within our own computer lab. To support teaching field and technologically mediated courses, the department has licenses for required software (e.g., Arc Pro, photogrammetry), as well as state of the art technology (iPad, laptops, drone).Experience
and Education Requirements The successful applicant will have:
A proven record of excellence in teaching, demonstrating clear evidence of continued pedagogical development, a learner-centred approach, and ability and willingness to teach some classes online as needed.
At minimum, an M.Sc. in Earth Science (or a related field)
Job Information and Responsibilities:
As Lecturer, the successful candidate will:
Teach 4.5 full course equivalents (FCE) annually (yearly teaching to fulfil this standard load would typically be 6 single semester courses, each with a lecture and lab component). The 4.5 FCE teaching load may be distributed over the year, with 3.5 - 4.0 FCE taught during the fall and winter terms, and an additional 0.5-1.0 FCE taught during the spring and/or summer terms.
Teach lab and/or lecture sections in undergraduate courses in Earth Science, including but not restricted to: GEOL 1204 - Geology for Engineers, GEOL 3305 - Geomatics, and GEOL
4310 - Geological Mapping. Ability to teach GEOL
2400 - Field Methods and/or GEOL
3413 - Structural Geology would be considered an asset. Other courses and new course development may be required as needed.
Contribute to the service activities, with willingness to help support the Department, the Faculty of Science, the University, and the geoscience community. Typical service activities for Lecture Stream faculty members include high school and community outreach, mentoring/coaching of students primarily at the introductory levels, program development, student advising, and departmental and university committee participation.
Engage in scholarship through professional development activities to enhance teaching and/or service duties.
