SMES – Vice Principal with a Teaching Assignment

Unfilled Position – Effective August 1st, 2026 for the 2026‑2027 School Year. Final date to receive applications at midnight on May 13th, 2026. Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Public School Administrators Association of Nova Scotia Agreement.

First available to current Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education administrators who are currently members of PSAANS. Second, available to all applicants who hold a valid Nova Scotia Teaching License, or are eligible for a Nova Scotia Teaching License.

St. Mary's Elementary School is situated in Aylesford, Kings County, and includes Grades primary (P) to five (5). The school has a projected 14.88 full‑time equivalent teaching positions and a projected enrollment of 188 students for the 2026‑2027 school year. The Vice Principal will assist the Principal by providing instructional leadership, ensuring that the Public Schools Program and curriculum are implemented to maximize student learning, and overseeing the orderly operation of the school in the Principal’s absence.

Qualifications

and Abilities
  • A Master’s of Education degree in instructional/educational leadership or its equivalent is preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful instructional leadership at the elementary school level is preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years exemplary teaching experience in a public school.
  • The ability to provide instructional leadership.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, community, and outside agencies to better meet the needs of students in the school.
  • The ability to use appropriate communication modes, including current technologies.
  • The ability to be a positive contributor to an administrative team.
  • The ability to assist the school staff to achieve the goals and objectives, and to follow the policies and procedures of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education, and the school.
  • The ability and commitment to support staff and educational partners in decision‑making by demonstrating an energetic and cooperative leadership style.
  • The ability to assist the principal in creating and maintaining a safe, orderly, positive and effective teaching and learning environment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Principal in ensuring a positive, safe, respectful learning and working environment for all stakeholders.
  • Assist the Principal in establishing a school‑wide vision of commitment to high standards and academic success for all students.
  • Assist the Principal in providing leadership, cultivating leadership in others, and managing people, data, and processes.
  • Complete required documents as requested by the Centre and/or the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
  • Assist in identifying staffing needs and in the selection of staff.
  • Take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance of the enrolled students.
  • Supervise school‑based staff, including attendance management, performance management, and addressing personnel matters.
  • Support professional growth through professional development planning and ongoing feedback.
  • Ensure that appropriate evaluation techniques are used for both students and staff.
  • Monitor the maintenance of systems that handle organizational tasks such as student records, teacher records, attendance, purchasing, budgets, and timetables.
  • Ensure replacement staff are hired when necessary.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the school.
  • Maintain financial records and comply with financial policies and procedures.
