The Faculty of Health’s faculty, staff and students are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations through diverse programming with a focus on critical clinical and social justice, collaborative research, and strong community partnerships. The Faculty of Health is one of the largest faculties at Dalhousie, comprised of eight schools, one college and one program, more than 1000 employees, over 3,000 students, and offers 45 academic programs.

The School of Social Work’s BSW and MSW programs are guided by the School’s mission to create a socially just society. We are concerned with issues of poverty, inequality, and social and political marginality, and seek to develop practitioners and scholars who are critical thinkers and are effective in advancing progressive change, whether through individual or community practice, or through policy and political engagement.

The School has launched a number of innovative initiatives, including the first ever Africentric Bachelor of Social Work program in Canada, where we will be graduating 36 African Nova Scotians or students of African descent in October 2026 with the hope of beginning a second cohort in January 2027. Also expected to begin in January 2027, we will have an MSW – L’nuey program, a land-based graduate social work program for Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous social workers.

And, we have the Social Work Community Clinic which has been in existence for twelve years serving marginalized members of the Halifax region, and training social work students and students in other health related professions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the BSW and/or MSW programs, both on site, in Halifax, and online by distance delivery to students across Canada and engage in relevant research activities and community scholarship, including contributing to ‘Health Equity and Resilience’, one of three research focus areas in the Faculty of Health. The incumbent in this position must be able to teach a variety of social work courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including our new Disability Justice course as part of our new BSW curriculum.

Activities at local, national, and international levels are expected to promote continuous improvement in research, teaching and learning at Dalhousie.

Either a BSW or MSW is required, preference will be given to candidates with a PhD in social work or related field (would consider candidates close to completing their PhD by time of appointment), as well as demonstrated excellence or potential in teaching, research, and on-line delivery. Preference will be given to candidates with social work practice, research experience, and a critical clinical perspective.
