Position: Part-Time Academic (THEA 3712.03: Stage Design 2b) - Winter 2027
Job Summary &

Key Responsibilities

This Part-Time Academic will be fully responsible for teaching and grading one section of THEA Stage Design 2b, from January 1 to April 30, 2027 (Winter Term 2027), as follows:

  • Develop 12 weeks of course content related to scenic design for live performance to be delivered in person through lectures, readings, discussions, presentations, and other assessments.
  • Build the online course space in Brightspace.
  • Grade assessments (student presentations, design assignments, essays/written work, participation/ discussions) and provide timely feedback to students.
  • The instructor will work closely with faculty and teaching staff in the Stage Design and Technical Theatre program to coordinate curriculum requirements. The instructor is required to provide a Method of Assessment. This position reports to the Director of the Fountain School of Performing Arts.

    Description:

    In Stage Design 2b, students will: develop complex concepts and practice artistic versatility through examining diverse style and genre; solve in-depth design challenges; develop multi-scene set design; further develop skills in scale model building and drafting, as well as learn how to realize designs using a variety of technologies.

    Qualifications/Requirements of Position

  • The successful applicant will have an MA or MFA in Scenic Design or a related discipline. Candidates with a BA, BFA, or Certificate in a related discipline, and/or substantial professional experience in the relevant discipline, will be considered.
  • Proficient in 3D scale model construction and hand and digital drafting practices. Experience with Vector Works or Sketch Up is considered an asset.
  • Additional assets include experience in scenic painting, props design, design for film and television, and/or other areas of performance design, including costume, lighting, or digital design.
  • Previous experience teaching at a university, with documented evidence of teaching ability, is also an asset.
