Job Summary &

Key Responsibilities

The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching MARI/OCEA
4556, OCEA/BIOL 5665, “Hacking the Blue Planet: the Scientific and Social Dimensions of Ocean Fertilization” during the 2026/27 Fall Term.

This course explores the biology, ecology, biogeochemistry and ethical and legal dimensions of purposeful ocean fertilization. Through lectures, discussion, case studies, and group projects, students consider the biological and oceanographic basis of ocean fertilization and its use as a
1) scientific tool and
2) controversial geoengineering strategy for climate change mitigation. Students will also consider ocean fertilization in context with very recent developments in other ocean-based climate engineering strategies.

Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures and evaluation of assignments, handling student issues, submitting grades etc. In addition, the part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. This position reports to the Chair of the Biology Department.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

  • A graduate degree in Oceanography, Marine Biology or a related field and research experience related to the topics of the course. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a should include a letter of interest and up-to-date First-time applicants should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as summary of relevant course evaluations) and must provide the names of two references.
