Job Summary

Reporting to the Central Plant Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Key Responsibilities

  • Efficient operation of boilers and chillers (operation of biofuel system if in Truro location) for maximum performance
  • Provides ongoing monitoring of Thermal Plant systems and equipment to ensure safety and efficiency (ie. boilers, chillers, diesel generator, electrical transformer, controls, etc.)
  • Performs maintenance on Thermal Plant systems and equipment to ensure continuous operation
  • Maintains a clean work environment in the thermal plant
  • Performs other maintenance tasks as required
  • Responds appropriately to critical alarms by investigating and analyzing upset conditions in order to identify and correct problems or request assistance
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Performs water treatment control duties, as required
  • Completes log sheets on regular scheduled intervals, as directed
  • Completes daily log book entries on each shift as required
  • Completes daily, weekly and monthly inspection sheets, as directed
  • Energy management through Metasys/Rockwell Plant Controls as required and directed
  • Maintains a clean work environment
  • Will provide relief coverage for the regular shift operators in addition to their own regularly scheduled operating and maintenance shifts to make up their full-time hours
  • Performs other duties as required

    Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus

    Required Qualifications

  • Valid 3rd Class Power Engineer’s certificate (standardized) recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years recent and related experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer control systems including Johnson Controls Metasys and the Digital Control System (DCS) (burner management system and boiler modulating system) of boiler controls
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer use and various programs
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings/blueprints
  • Familiar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Ability to take direction and be flexible in working hours
  • Must be willing and able to work shifts, rotating shifts and overtime, as required
  • General safety and WHMIS training an asset
  • Must be capable of working alone
