About the role

Principal Systems Engineer – Halifax Class Frigates In‑Service Support

The candidate will support the Halifax Class Integrated Combat System In‑Service Support program and will work at Canadian Forces Base Stadacona, Halifax, once the Government of Canada grants the necessary security clearances. They will evolve within a multidisciplinary team and perform engineering tasks covering the entire system lifecycle: specification, design, development, integration and testing, deployment, maintenance, and field troubleshooting.

The candidate will participate in engineering activities that may include the following:

  • Ensure daily management of the IBM Rational DOORS MD Object‑Oriented Requirement Management System (DOORS MD) repository: create and modify requirement modules, apply attribute sets, run query‑based reports, and apply version control best practices
  • Capture links between requirements, design, and test artifacts, maintaining full traceability from design to product launch
  • Collaborate with test, engineering, software, and quality teams to refine DOORS workflows and models, ensuring alignment with global publishing and compliance objectives
  • Witness testing
  • Review test plans and test sheets
  • Review tasks, preliminary design, and detailed design, as well as critical design review
  • Perform structured design review
  • Offer testing support
  • Perform needs analyses
  • Conduct market studies
  • Define and monitor technical performance measures
  • Work on system architecture and design
  • Plan system integration
  • Create the design document
  • Apply system engineering processes and best practices.
What you bring to the position
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in a related discipline or equivalent co‑op education, with at least five years of professional experience, OR at least three years of professional experience with a related master's degree
  • Considerable experience in defining, developing, and maintaining requirements for a complex real‑time naval tactical command and control system
  • Proven experience in the software, systems, hardware, or maintenance engineering lifecycle
  • Solid knowledge of IBM Rational DOORS
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication; demonstrated ability to translate complex technical requirements into clear and actionable documentation
  • Proficiency in the fundamentals of requirements engineering (traceability, impact analysis, change control)
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to work well alone or in a team
  • Ability to obtain a NATO Secret level security clearance.
Additional skills desired for the position
  • Knowledge of Redmine and Windchill
  • Knowledge of requirements management system
  • Knowledge of test management system
  • Knowledge of technical requirement statements
  • Knowledge of Halifax class ship combat system integration performance specifications
  • Experience with Combat Management System 330 (CMS 330)
  • Agile method experience
  • Experience in naval or defense fields
  • Experience in change management, testing, security, safety, electromagnetic interference, electromagnetic compatibility, or environmental qualification.
