Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering advice and technical direction to support the safety, reliability and long-term performance of HHB's bridges, approaches, ancillary structures and related facilities.
  • Develop technical work plans, scopes, investigations, analyses, preliminary designs, risk assessments, cost estimates and schedules for infrastructure projects.
  • Assess bridge conditions and recommend repair, rehabilitation, retrofit or replacement solutions that support sound asset management and lifecycle planning.
  • Prepare and review engineering reports, designs, specifications, tender documents, requests for proposals and other technical procurement materials.
  • Support consultant and contractor selection, contract administration, change orders, project documentation and technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Monitor project scope, quality, risks, schedules and budgets in collaboration with senior engineers, the Project Management Office, consultants and contractors.
  • Conduct site inspections and support investigations related to structural incidents, deficiencies, unusual events and bridge asset condition.
  • Use inspection, maintenance and Computerized Maintenance Management System data to inform evidence-based decisions on infrastructure health, risk and priorities.
  • Build effective working relationships with internal teams, consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies and technical stakeholders.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring work follows occupational health and safety requirements, HHB policies and safe work practices.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Five to seven years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Member in good standing, or eligible for membership, with Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, infrastructure maintenance, construction practices and project delivery.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, specifications, scopes of work, estimates, schedules, tender documents and requests for proposals.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, judgement and communication skills, with the ability to present clear technical recommendations.
  • Proficiency with standard data management tools and engineering-related software.
  • Valid Canadian Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
  • Assets include specialized knowledge of long-span or suspension bridges, project management training or accreditation, and experience in a complex public sector, Crown corporation or similar environment.
Position Details
  • This is a Full-time, Permanent, Non-union position, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • On-call response or extended hours will be required based on operational demands.
  • The annual salary range for this position is $91,813 - $114,766.
  • Hiring 1 position.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office-based, with occasional site visits to bridges, construction sites and industrial environments.
  • Site work may involve exposure to weather, traffic hazards, noise, active construction areas, safety-sensitive locations, work at heights, and work in confined spaces.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment, including fall-protection equipment where applicable, and adherence to HHB safety procedures are mandatory.
  • The role requires strong attention to detail when reviewing drawings, reports, technical documentation, inspection findings and project deliverables.
  • Occasional deadlines, project pressures, safety-sensitive decisions, on-call requirements, or travel may be required to address site issues.
  • Safety training and specialized PPE will be provided by the employer.
