Job Description & How to Apply Below
As a member of the military, Air Operations Officers command, control, and coordinate air and space forces in tactical, operational, and strategic environments. They are experts in planning, directing, and leading air and space operations, leveraging experience developed at tactical units and formations to integrate those effects in higher‑level joint, combined, and pan‑domain operations and campaigns. Typical employment areas include unit and wing operations and command positions, air and space operations centres, joint ops and plans, in RCAF and CAF strategic roles, and with allies and partners in standing and deployed C2 nodes and headquarters.
Work Environment
Air Operations Officers may be employed across the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), though typically within the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). They typically begin their careers in flying or space squadrons/wings to develop capability‑specific awareness. Following this, they may branch out into other capabilities or bring their expertise to bear on operational and strategic operations. They may also be employed in force generation activities such as project management and requirements capture and tracking.
They work alongside officers of other air operations occupations, bringing an outside view of the aircraft to complement those who begin their CAF journey from inside an aircraft. They may be employed worldwide from headquarters, airfields, ships, or in the field with the Army, providing expertise in rescue coordination centers, headquarters, and project offices.
For those choosing a career in the Regular Force, after completing required training, they are assigned to their first base and may relocate at some point. Reserve personnel work part‑time in a specific Reserve unit; they typically work one night per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full‑time employment.

If you already have a university degree, the CAF will assess whether your program matches the criteria. Qualified candidates may enter directly into training following Basic Military Officer Qualification training.
Under the Regular Officer Training Plan, the CAF pays recruits to complete a bachelor’s degree in the Royal Military College System. Recruits receive full‑time salary, medical and dental care, and vacation time with full pay in exchange for guaranteed employment for a defined period. Candidates enter the Canadian Military College System as Officer Cadets and study subjects relevant to both military and academic careers.
If applying for the ROTP, it is recommended to also apply to other Canadian universities.
Training
After enrolment, Air Operations Officers begin by completing the Basic Military Officer Occupation Qualification training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School for 12 weeks. Topics cover military knowledge, principles of leadership, regulations, customs, weapons handling, first aid, force protection, field training, navigation, and leadership. Physical fitness training is included.
Following Basic Military Officer Qualification training, official second‑language training may be offered, ranging from two to nine months.
Air Operations Officers attend Barker College in Winnipeg for the Basic Air Operations Officer Course, currently under development and expected to last 18–20 weeks.
During this course, officers receive instruction in:
Conduct of air operations communications
Planning of flight operations
Management of flight operations
Management of airfield operations
Coordination of Emergency Response Plans
Management of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations
Further training includes the Air Force Officer Development program and the Basic Space Operations Course. Advanced training is available in Air Requirements, Airworthiness, Project Management, Operational Test and Evaluation, and graduate studies.
Part‑time Options
Reservists work part‑time for an Air Reserve Flight or integrated squadron at their local Wing, without mandatory relocation. They may volunteer for deployment on operational military missions. Training is aligned with required professional standards, with arrangements made for additional specialized skills.
Reservists may also pursue an Individual Learning Plan, taking university courses related to the job and receiving reimbursement up to 50 % of tuition and mandatory costs, up to $2,000 per year for up to four years ($8,000 total).
RCAF Reservists serve full‑time while completing occupation training, working up to 12 days per month at their home Air Reserve Flight or Squadron. They are paid 92.8 % of Regular Force rates and receive a reasonable benefits package.
