Overview
As a military member, surgical technicians are responsible for providing a sterile environment for surgical procedures in both static (domestic) and operational (mission) settings. They are integral members of the surgical team, offering perioperative care, assisting surgeons and anesthesiologists, and applying orthopedic casts during surgeries. They are also responsible for reprocessing medical instruments and handling surgical materials and equipment.

Their main responsibilities include:

  • Providing a clean and safe environment for patient treatment and assisting surgical teams at all stages of procedures
  • Maintaining equipment functionality, providing on-site training for operations, and supervising operating rooms in the field
  • Supporting patient recovery post-anesthesia
  • Decontaminating, cleaning, maintaining, and supplying materials and instruments, including packaging and sterilization
  • Using and maintaining medical and resuscitation equipment
  • Documenting and managing medical records, reports, and communications
  • Managing supplies and inventory control

Work Environment
Technicians typically work in civilian hospitals within military surgical teams, with opportunities to join civilian teams in Canada or be deployed abroad. Usually, they work regular hours, Monday to Friday, but shifts or on-call work may be required.

If you join the Regular Force, you will be assigned to your first base after completing the required training. While there is some flexibility in postings, relocations are common. Reserve Force members serve part-time at a reserve unit of their choice, generally working one evening a week and some weekends, with potential for full-time employment.

  • Direct Enlistment Options
  • Subsidized Education Options
Applicants must hold a diploma in auxiliary nursing, a valid license to practice as an IAA issued by a provincial authority, and an attestation letter from the professional authority. An IAA certification in operating room techniques is an asset.

Training
Initial training is the Basic Military Qualification Course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. The course covers basic skills and common military knowledge, with a physically demanding training regime.

The training comprises four modules: a two-year practical nursing training at a recognized Canadian institution, a six to eight-month OR technician course at Algonquin College or Grant Mac Ewan University, a 1,500-hour on-the-job training program in surgical specialties, and field surgical services training.

Post-qualification, trainees complete a medical instrument reprocessing course. Advanced orthopedics training is available upon promotion, focusing on advanced cast application and orthopedic device maintenance.
