Job Summary

The Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OPIE) is responsible for ensuring smooth, efficient institutional operations and supporting the strategic priorities of Dalhousie by providing shared services in strategy development, project and planning support, data warehousing, governance, and advanced analytics. Reporting to the Director, Data Transformation and Governance, the Junior Business Intelligence Analyst will support the development, maintenance, and quality of institutional reporting and analytics to enable evidence‑based decision making across the university.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, maintain, automate and enhance recurring operational and institutional reports for units, improving consistency and reducing manual effort; ensure reports adhere to institutional definitions, governance standards, and business rules; investigate and resolve data issues.
  • Build data analysis expressions (DAX) measures, calculated tables, and optimized data models; apply user‑centered design principles and OPIE’s visualization standards to ensure clarity, consistency, and accessibility; collaborate with senior analysts to ensure cross‑dashboard alignment and reuse of shared logic.
  • Support the development and maintenance of semantic models and dataset structures within Power Business Intelligence (BI); work with Senior BI Analysts and Data Architects to validate relationships, measures, and metadata.
  • Validate data transformations and conduct reconciliation between source systems, the enterprise data warehouse (EDW), and BI products; troubleshoot data refresh issues, broken logic, and discrepancies between source systems and reports.
  • Document business rules, definitions, transformation logic for use in MS Purview; establish data lineage, definitions, and business rules to support governance and compliance; execute data profiling and implement data quality checks within BI datasets.
  • Provide frontline support to campus users by answering questions about dashboards, filters, definitions, and data interpretation; contribute to training materials, documentation, and user guides; participate in workshops and feedback sessions to collect user insights and identify areas of improvement.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Economics, or related field plus one‑to‑two years’ relevant experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Foundational experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar BI tools (academic, internship, or entry‑level work experience); demonstrated understanding of relational databases, SQL concepts, and data modeling basics.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem‑solving, and attention‑to‑detail skills with the ability to multi‑task and work independently in a rapid‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication (verbal and written) skills, including the ability to work with both technical and non‑technical partners and to document processes clearly and communicate technical concepts in user‑friendly language.
  • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, data integrity, and ongoing professional development.
Preferred Assets
  • Experience working with enterprise data, EDW environments, or large complex datasets.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Azure data ecosystem (Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Data Lake).
  • Familiarity with data governance concepts, including definitions, lineage, quality rules, and stewardship.
  • Experience applying visualization best practices and user‑centered design.
