Overview
As a member of the military, Critical Care Nursing Officers provide care in the critical care domain of practice to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in in‑patient care and medical evacuation environments while on operation. They are specialized in intensive care, emergency room and trauma resuscitation.

Roles and Responsibilities
Critical Care Nursing Officers work within a collaborative practice model with other members of the health care team and lead the nursing care delivery within their area of practice.

Work Environment
Critical Care Nursing Officers usually work in civilian hospitals, aeromedical evacuation units, operational CAF units, training and education establishments, and headquarters. Work schedules vary from shift work to a regular 40‑hour week, depending on the environment. Officers may be called to contribute to exercises, medical evacuation flights, and domestic or international emergencies.

Field Operations
During field exercises and deployments abroad, officers live and work in the same environment as the CAF members they treat.

Career Path – Regular Force
Upon completion of all required training, officers are assigned to their first base. Relocation is common, but flexibility exists with regards to postings.

Career Path – Primary Reserve Force
Reserve officers work one night per week and some weekends on a part‑time basis, with possibilities for full‑time employment, and are not obligated to relocate.

Entry Plans

Direct Entry – Officers with a university degree, RN license in a Canadian province/territory, and civilian critical care experience may be placed directly into the role after evaluation.

In‑Service Selection – Officers can pursue further specialization as a Critical Care Nursing Officer upon selection, progressing in practice domains and ranks.

Training and Certification
After completing the Rank Qualification Lieutenant training, officers are required to complete a formal critical care nursing course and earn certification to demonstrate clinical competencies. Additional specialty courses and certifications are available, such as:

Critical Care Aeromedical Evacuation Specialist

Strategic Tactical & Forward Aeromedical Evacuation

Mobile Surgical Resuscitation Team

Canadian Medical Emergency Response Team

Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant

Nurse Practitioner

Special Forces support

Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistants (CCNO‑AAs)
CCNO‑AAs provide advanced nursing and anesthesia support in acute, complex, and remote environments under the supervision of an anesthetist. Their roles include:

Preoperative assessment and preparation

Anesthesia‑focused patient monitoring

Airway and ventilation support

Induction, maintenance, and emergence support

Regional and neuraxial anesthesia support

Hemodynamic monitoring and management

Perioperative crisis management and resuscitation

Vascular access and fluid and blood replacement support

Procedural sedation delivery and monitoring

Post‑anesthesia care and patient handover

Equipment quality assurance, maintenance, and troubleshooting

Schedule and Deployment
The work schedule varies from shift work to a regular 40‑hour week, depending on the environment. CCNO‑AAs may be called to support exercises, domestic response operations, medical evacuation missions, and international deployments. During field exercises and deployments abroad, they live and work in the same environment as the CAF members they support.
