Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Outdoor Kayak Paddle Night Instructor with the St. Mary’s Boat Club.

The St. Mary’s Boat Club engages children, youth and families in paddling based experiential programs, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. As part of the Parks and Recreation's Adventure Earth Centre, The St Mary’s Boat Club programs give children and youth safe access to water activities and the knowledge and experience to practice them safety. All of the St Mary’s Boat Club programs are carried out on The North West Arm in Halifax.

Kayak Paddle Night Instructors take groups on 1-2 hour paddling excursions on the Northwest Arm. Instructors are expected to have a good knowledge of paddling safety and the ability to engage comfortably with the public. This position also manages the fleet of canoes, paddle boards and related equipment, delivers excellent customer service, ensures participant safety, and records rental statistics. This position may also offer the opportunity to lead canoeing and stand up paddleboard programs dependent on skills and training.

Programs include kayak paddle night classes for ages 19+ and 13-18.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the Adventure Earth Centre and St Mary’s Boat Club core values, understand and uphold HRM policies and procedures
  • Attend all required training sessions
  • Confidently set up sites and deliver assigned programs to participants according to program manuals, content, and delivery methods.
  • Provide clear instruction on paddling techniques, water safety, equipment use, and trip expectations.
  • Establish and maintain group community standards, support other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours, and use appropriate group management techniques
  • Organize, manage and maintain equipment and supplies
  • Ensure the safety and positive experience of participants, and other staff at all times
  • Support persons with diverse needs and disabilities in programs (e.g.adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.)
  • Safely navigate The Northwest Arm in Halifax with groups of paddlers.
  • Learn some historical information about The Northwest Arm for interpretive sessions
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid including Level C CPR valid through to September 30th 2026.
  • Must have kayaking level 1 skills qualification or higher, or willing to obtain (can be provided with training)
  • Previous experience with adults or youth working in an outdoor adventure or recreation setting.
  • Previous leadership experience with outdoor or paddling programs.
  • Must hold restricted operator's license (Maritime) – VFH radio training or willing attain (can be provided as part of training)
  • Considered an Asset:
  • Previous experience with the Adventure Earth Centre or St Mary’s Boat Club Programs
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Pleasure Craft Operator card
  • Paddle Canada or ORCKA Canoe certification
  • Previous experience working with persons with disabilities
  • Advanced First Aid an asset
  • Studies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education or similar courses
  • Experience working in customer service
  • Kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard skills or instructor certifications.
  • Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
  • Staff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work sites
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
