Job Summary

The Thompson synthetic chemistry research group at Dalhousie University develops and evaluates technologies involving pyrroles, and other conjugated chemical species, for their potential as photo- and chemo-active materials. This project focuses on the development and evaluation of sensors. The Laboratory Assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator (and/or designate) to support research activities related to the development and evaluation of photo- and chemo-active materials, including synthetic chemistry, characterization methods such as absorption spectroscopy and emission spectroscopy, and creation of written records and materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct the synthesis, purification, and evaluation of chemical compounds, particularly pyrrolic and other conjugated systems, while performing associated laboratory tasks.
  • Review scientific literature to identify and implement optimal synthetic and purification methodologies.
  • Maintain organized, safe, and efficient laboratory operations, including record‑keeping, equipment coordination, and chemical inventory management.
  • Demonstrate strong laboratory technique and adhere to all safety protocols and hazard‑minimization requirements.
  • Communicate research progress clearly and promptly, collaborating respectfully with the research group to support shared goals.
  • Uphold institutional and group policies, contribute positively to team culture, and protect all intellectual property.

    Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

    Successful applicant must be able to begin work 1st March 2026.

    Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in Chemistry with a focus on synthesis and analysis of structure and photoactive properties of novel compounds, with five years’ experience, beyond academic training, working in synthetic chemistry and with an in-depth knowledge of the synthesis and purification of pyrroles, dipyrroles and related chemical intermediates and materials.
  • Experience using specialized software and hardware related to dual absorption and emission spectroscopy data acquisition.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently and multi-task across more than one activity or project.
  • Ability to create and maintain an accurate laboratory notebook.
  • Attentive to the needs for accuracy, organization, high-quality and reproducible work, with excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team consisting of members with varied skills levels and experience.
