Job Summary
Dalhousie DalSAFE (Security Services) is a diverse and inclusive team of public safety professionals that collaborates with students, staff, and faculty to build a safer and more connected campus experience. Reporting to the Chief Assurance & Risk Officer, AVP , University Risk Management, the Director, DalSAFE provides strategic, relational, and programmatic leadership for Dalhousie University’s integrated campus safety system. The position is responsible for the long-term maturity, continuity, and effectiveness of DalSAFE as a core institutional risk control embedded within Dalhousie’s governance, student experience, and operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provides strategic leadership for DalSAFE, guiding the long-term development of an integrated, non-police campus safety system aligned with institutional values and priorities.
Designs and oversees comprehensive safety and risk management programs, including emergency preparedness, behavioural intervention, sexualized violence response, substance harm reduction, and community safety initiatives.
Advises senior leadership and governance bodies on institutional safety risks, delivering policy recommendations, assurance reporting, and strategic direction focused on system maturity and resilience.
Leads crisis and emergency management as Incident Commander, coordinating internal and external responses while ensuring clear communication, proportional decision-making, and community reassurance.
Oversees organizational effectiveness through resource planning, workforce design, and performance monitoring to ensure sustainable service delivery, staff development, and operational continuity.
Builds and sustains high-trust relationships across the Dalhousie community and with external partners, serving as a senior spokesperson on campus safety and influencing decision-making at the executive level.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
Undergraduate degree, with over ten years’ progressive experience in community safety, security, crime prevention, or related fields, including restorative practice (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
Extensive management experience (minimum five years) within complex, unionized and/or public sector environments.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, policy development, and leading organizational change initiatives.
Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and key partner engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership, community partners, and the public.
Advanced analytical and decision-making skills, including experience conducting risk assessments, navigating complex and ambiguous situations, and developing solutions in collaboration with senior leadership.
