Facilities Operative Apprenticeship at The Halifax Academy
Join our team as a Facilities Operative Apprentice helping to keep our school clean safe and well-maintained. Youll support site security daily maintenance and uphold high health and safety standards while promoting the welfare of all pupils and staff.
Apprenticeship Overview- Salary : 7.55 an hour automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19 year olds
- Working Week :
Monday to Friday 10am till 6pm with breaks included - Hours : 37.5 hours per week

The Halifax Academy Gibbet Street Halifax HX2 0BA
- Monitor any issues relating to cleaning equipment and product compliance (COSHH).
- Act as a key holder carrying out security procedures for the buildings and grounds, including the routine and non-routine opening of The Halifax Academy estate.
- Provide access where possible to the premises and classrooms in the event of snow, minor flooding or similar emergency situations.
- Undertake risk assessments where relevant with support of the Facilities Services & Estates Manager.
- Carry out first line repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure that all areas within the site are free from litter and that all drains and gullies are free‑flowing and clean.
- Ensure that all caretaking and cleaning equipment is safe and in working condition, arranging for repair as appropriate.
- Carry out routine checks on ancillary equipment such as fire alarms and water checks.
- Carry out Academy based procedures in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident or major damage.
- Regularly set up and remove furniture (e.g., exams and daily assemblies).
- Distribute and relocate equipment and incoming goods, and provide occasional collection of miscellaneous provisions away from academy premises.
- Carry out duties in accordance with Academy based policies and Health and Safety procedures, including risk assessment.
- Respect confidentiality using the Academy protocols for sharing information such as child protection information.
- Undertake any other professional duties as required.

- Good attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Basic DIY or practical skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and maintaining a safe environment for children.
- Basic ICT skills and record‑keeping ability.
- Preparedness to work flexible hours as part of a shift pattern.
- Experience working in a school or educational setting.
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths (Grade C / 4 or above).
- Interest in facilities management maintenance or site operations.
- Willingness to undertake further training and gain qualifications.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations.
Potential full‑time employment for the right candidate upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
