Job overviewThe Cellular Pathology laboratory prepares samples for histology, non‑gynae cytology, and andrology. The role involves rotating and maintaining competence in all areas of Cellular Pathology and may require completing the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection within a 3‑year timescale. Cross site to Huddersfield will be required.
Main duties of the jobTo act in a scientific role and carry out all routine investigations within the department, following training as necessary and ensuring quality of service. To assist in the provision of the cellular pathology and mortuary service for the Trust’s hospitals and CCGs by providing specialist knowledge and technical skills to process, analyse, understand and interpret results of diagnostic tests.
Under supervision, examine, prepare for dissection, and dissect a range of specimens commensurate with the trainee’s training and experience, following guidelines set by consultant histopathologists. Rotate regularly through histology, andrology, non‑gynae cytology, and mortuary sections.
To train junior members of staff and be involved with service development through laboratory and clinical audit. Continuous professional development is essential for this post and further study will be encouraged. Participate in the extended working rota of the department.
Person specification QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING- Registration with the HCPC
- Degree in Biomedical Science
- IBMS Specialist postgraduate portfolio in cellular pathology, MSc in cellular pathology or equivalence
- A member of the IBMS
- Knowledge of all areas of the cellular pathology department
- Postgraduate qualifications related to cellular pathology
- Significant recent post‑registration experience in cellular pathology
- Supervision and training of MLA, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff
- Experience of Category A specimen dissection
- Experience of UKAS accreditation and HTA
- Experience of Category B & C specimen dissection
- Andrology experience
- Experience of leading a team
- Specialist cellular pathology training/experience provided by reference laboratory/external courses/examination
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
Applicants may be required to undertake a DBS. The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and recover the cost from your salary when you commence in post.
This is a condition of your employment. You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £16 cost per year.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
