Mechanical Estimator Hamilton Region, Ontario
A well-established Mechanical Contractor in the Hamilton region is looking to add an Estimator to their team. This opportunity is open to both experienced Mechanical Estimators and / or seasoned tradespeople (such as plumbers, pipe fitters or HVAC technicians) who are ready to transition off the tools into an estimating role.
Working closely with Project Managers and field leadership, you will play a key role in pricing competitive, accurate bids for retrofit, construction and maintenance projects in the institutional and commercial sectors.

Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop detailed cost estimates and budgets for tenders, design‑build projects and maintenance proposals
Quantify and price labour, materials and equipment from drawings and specifications
Perform quantity take‑offs from mechanical and engineering drawings
Review all tender documents, specifications and addenda to confirm full scope of work
Identify project risks, gaps and value engineering opportunities during pre‑construction
Undertake preliminary scheduling and critical path planning using Microsoft Project
Solicit, analyse and level sub‑trade and supplier quotations
Ensure all pricing conforms to project plans, specifications and submission requirements
Source and track new bid opportunities using platforms such as Bids & Tenders, Biddingo, MERX
Attend pre‑bid meetings and site visits to validate scope and site conditions
Participate in prequalification and proposal submissions
Coordinate and review complete bid packages prior to submission
Support Project Managers during project startup and provide estimating input throughout construction
Assist with project benchmarks, target costing, forecasting and change pricing
Participate in project handover and close‑out meetings to capture lessons learned
Act as a technical resource to operations and project teams as required
Option A – Experienced Estimator
10+ years of mechanical construction estimating experience
Strong knowledge of Ontario construction practices and standards
Proven track record pricing institutional and commercial mechanical projects
Option B – Experienced Tradesperson Transitioning to Estimating
8–15+ years in the mechanical trades (plumbing, pipe fitting, HVAC, etc.)
Field experience reading drawings, coordinating installations and planning work
Strong interest in moving into an office‑based estimating/pre‑construction role
Willingness to learn estimating software and formal bidding processes
Skills & Qualifications
Excellent ability to read and interpret mechanical and construction drawings
Working knowledge of labour productivity, material take‑offs and construction sequencing
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and Microsoft Project
Experience with Accubid (or strong willingness to learn for transitioning tradespeople)
Understanding of estimating, budgeting and cost control principles
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Excellent time management and organization
Post‑secondary education in mechanical engineering, construction management or a related field is an asset (not mandatory for experienced trades candidates)
Previous project management or site supervision experience considered an asset
