The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario invites applications for the full-time position of Academic Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with appropriate experience. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join the staff at Hamilton’s Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre and McMaster Children’s Hospital, one of Canada’s largest pediatric academic tertiary care teaching hospitals, and fully affiliated teaching hospital with McMaster University.

The successful candidate will join the current complement of outpatient child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatric psychologists, and allied health professionals working at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre and McMaster Children’s Hospital. The ambulatory service at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre serves a diverse patient population through our outpatient services, brief intervention program, and day hospital program. As a member of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, the successful candidate will provide coverage to our 22-bed inpatient unit, 6-bed Mental Health Assessment Unit, Consult‑Liaison Service, and emergency mental health service.

We welcome individuals with specific areas of interest, such as substance use disorders. Our academic division has strong educational and research initiatives, allowing collaborations between researchers, educators, clinicians, community‑based service providers and knowledge leaders.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences is a multidisciplinary department consisting of MD and non‑MD faculty working within a unique regional network of psychiatric services that integrates two hospitals. We have excellent opportunities available for psychiatrists interested in an academic career in the following areas: inpatient mental health, consultation‑liaison, emergency psychiatry, neurodevelopmental disorders, and substance abuse.

Hamilton is situated on the western shore of Lake Ontario and offers the perfect combination of city life and nature. Our vibrant, accessible, family‑friendly core is bursting with new restaurants, breweries, and shops in addition to a large public art gallery, several theatres, and sports and entertainment arena. Hamilton area offers numerous recreational activities, such as boating, golfing, biking, skiing, and hiking along hundreds of kilometers of walking trails weaving along the waterfront, through the Hamilton area and along the renowned Bruce Trail.

Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will hold an MD and will have advanced training and experience in child psychiatry, with preference given to candidates with practice experience.
  • The candidate will have demonstrated commitment and skills in clinical education and will provide leadership and training to future Child Psychiatrists. There are ample education and supervision opportunities with the General Psychiatry training program, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Subspecialty Program, the Psychology postdoctoral program, residents from other Departments, medical and physician assistant students.
  • Interest and expertise in outpatient child and youth mental health and emergency psychiatry is an asset.
