Associate Director, Education Programming

Location:

Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Hybrid)

Department Description

McMaster Continuing Education (MCE) delivers over 45 educational programs, including for‑credit and non‑credit options, workshops, certificates, and diplomas. MCE serves the university community and the extended public, fostering adult learning, career advancement, and community enrichment.

Job Summary

The Associate Director (Education Programming) reports to the Senior Director and collaborates with Assistant Directors to advance a culture of quality continuing education. The role leads the development of innovative programs, supervises program managers, manages budgets, and represents MCE at internal and external forums.

Accountabilities Strategy and Vision
  • Advise the Senior Director on continuing education programming, enact strategic vision, and deliver innovative offerings.
  • Lead and implement organizational design and development strategies to respond to evolving institutional contexts.
  • Set and execute operational goals, strategic objectives, and core initiatives, including leading programming committees and working groups.
  • Recommend financial priorities, manage the annual budget, and monitor portfolio performance.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Generate new partnerships and manage collaborations across MCE and central support units.
  • Promote collaborative relationships within and beyond the MCE Leadership Team.
  • Lead and collaborate with Program Managers on technology, research, partnerships, and curriculum development.
  • Consult widely, invite feedback, and align services to university priorities.
  • Prepare regular, interim, and annual reports on budget, activities, and outcomes for senior leadership and external audiences.
  • Serve on committees related to continuing education programming and represent MCE at professional meetings.
Continuing Education Program Development
  • Develop methods to collect and analyze data on programming and align with senior reporting.
  • Establish policies, processes, and standards for continuing education programming.
  • Stay current with trends, scholarship, research, and technologies, and recommend best practices.
  • Curate resources for knowledge translation and dissemination across formats.
  • Promote partnerships with alumni and advancement offices to secure scholarships and bursaries.
  • Collaborate with faculty leadership to meet educational development needs.
  • Develop external partnerships for professional development training.
  • Oversee internal program review processes, including needs assessment, quality assurance, instructor evaluations, learner feedback, and issue resolution.
  • Write grant proposals and scholarly publications in continuing education.
Supervision and Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and supervise staff to advance strategic priorities.
  • Set learning goals, assess performance, and provide feedback for program managers and staff.
  • Mentor staff in leadership, coaching, and program development.
  • Recruit, assess, train, and onboard MCE staff and maintain performance standards for 14–20 Unifor staff.
  • Implement a cross‑functional matrix system for day‑to‑day oversight and workflow monitoring.
  • Address and resolve employee‑relations issues.
Qualifications Education
  • Master's or PhD degree in Education or a related field.
Experience
  • 5–10 years in a university system supporting educational development.
  • At least 5 years of management experience with program managers and education development roles.
  • At least 5 years of experience developing and managing programs, projects, and/or services, including associated budgets.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strategic planning and prioritization processes.
  • Balance multiple leadership, scholarly, and managerial roles with competing deadlines.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners.
  • Manage financial activities and communicate financial information.
  • Consultation and facilitation on educational development.
  • Assessment and evaluation of continuing education programming.
