Unit/Project Description

The Centre for Simulation-Based Learning (CSBL) is a central education resource within the Faculty of Health Sciences for all healthcare programs’ trainees. It provides facilities and equipment to support a variety of simulation-based education activities, ranging from basic clinical skills training to advanced, theatre-based immersive simulations. CSBL is an accredited simulation centre with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The Simulation Specialist is a member of the Simulation Team within the CSBL, who provides front‑line services to faculty, residents, students and visitors in all areas of simulation (high, medium and low‑fidelity). High‑fidelity simulation will be a major focus of this position and requires frequent collaboration with faculty to optimize the delivery and outcomes. This position is responsible for set‑up, transition and break down of all simulation activities, and must have comprehensive knowledge of various simulators, partial task trainers and the audiovisual system within the Centre.

This position is also expected to perform minor mechanical repairs on simulators and other equipment and assist with further repairs if needed.

Job Summary

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of specialized simulation equipment for education and simulation sessions. Works with faculty and other content experts, to support the creation, evaluation and improvement of simulation-based courses.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operates, maintains and programs simulation and audio‑visual equipment during training sessions and demonstrations requiring an understanding of the use and operation of different simulator technologies including partial task trainers, anatomic models, computer‑based simulation software, and full-body patient simulators.

Designs, programs and tests simulation scenarios required for educational programs and curriculum.

Collaborates with faculty in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of new courses, scenarios, simulation tools, research studies and other educational initiatives.

Writes sections of research publications.

Responsible for medical and technical equipment set‑up and clean‑up of education and simulation sessions.

Provides simulation support to various groups working on projects with various clinical and academic interests.

Creates designs to improve the technology and development of the center and develops strategies to enhance existing programs and services.

Contributes to the development and implementation of policies, procedures and practices for the unit.

Assists faculty with the development of digital media for educational and professional distribution, including PowerPoint presentations, video workshops, video demonstrations, and e‑learning modules.

Compiles educational materials and support documents to enhance teaching sessions.

Trains and assists end‑users in the use and operation of audio‑visual equipment, including digital cameras, video cameras, sound mixers, digital/analog converters, monitors, LCD projectors and patient simulators and simulation software.

Provides advice on the purchase of new capital equipment for the laboratory.

Oversees technical staff to ensure the effective maintenance and repair of simulator and clinical equipment.

Mines and extracts data from multiple databases.

Develops evaluation forms for faculty and educators to receive feedback from participants regarding simulation training.

Liaises with equipment manufacturers to install, repair, maintain and upgrade simulation, audio‑visual and computer equipment.

Plans, coordinates and schedules the booking of equipment and facilities.

Coordinates the recruitment and scheduling of research participants.

Logs user summary reports and evaluation objectives.
