The opportunity
What we need
The Coastal Restoration Coordinator (West Coast) contract will drive and support coastal restoration programmes, by collaborating with Iwi, coastal restoration groups, and the public.
The role will provide technical advice for restoration activities, coordinate working bees and plant orders with community groups, and place orders for plants and other related materials for the Coastcare programme, while providing regular progress reports to the key contact at Waikato Regional Council (WRC).
In this role you will promote the Coastcare and Coastal Restoration programmes and will work with a broad range of stakeholders, including WRC staff/contractors, Coastcare coordinators, local iwi, rural and suburban communities, pest plant control contractors, nurseries, and other local government representatives.
The services included in this procurement opportunity are:
- Honesty, Enthusiasm, Accountability, Respect and Teamwork are considered core competencies for all WRC Contractors.
- The nature of this work means that the contractor may need to work evenings and weekends to fit in with community group needs (attend group meetings etc.).
- Applicants will need a moderate level of fitness to engage in working bees and other activities.
- Applicants will need to be proficient using a PC or laptop to access Council systems and Microsoft Word suite.
- Applicants will need to hold, or be able to obtain, relevant qualifications for outdoor first aid, handling of agrichemicals and driving offroad in Council’s light utility vehicle.

What’s important to us?
It is important that respondents have the skills, knowledge, and expertise to form positive, lasting relationships with landowners, community groups, tangata whenua, DOC, and beach users and to bring these groups together to perform coastal restoration work at established Coastcare restoration sites. The Respondent must have the ability to listen, reason, negotiate and to find fair solutions and reasonable compromises between conflicting parties is an essential skill in this role.
An understanding of Te Reo and tikanga Māori and Māori worldviews would be highly desirable from our perspective.

As a coordinator for the Coastcare programme, you will be able to bring people together to make a meaningful and lasting positive difference to the coastal environment of the west coast, by improving coastal biodiversity through restoration projects and increasing resiliency to climate change and sea level rise.
It is anticipated that the Contract term will be for a period of 20-months, commencing in June 2026.
