About the Unit

Humanities Media and Computing (HMC) is a dynamic unit within the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, dedicated to delivering innovative technology and computing support. General Responsibilities

Responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of information technology infrastructure for a department or faculty. Manage networks and servers, and configure, test, implement, maintain, and repair all supported network, server, email, and microcomputer products for a department or faculty.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain information technology infrastructure for local and partner sites.
  • Facilitate meetings with clients to interpret, assess, and evaluate customer business requirements in order to establish
    project scope and design criteria for the modification and revision of existing systems.
  • Provide financial projections and budgeting for technical projects and technology acquisitions as needed.
  • Provide estimates of time and resources required to complete projects.
  • Write complex programs using various computing and scripting languages.
  • Design large complex databases for a program or department.
  • Design, implement, maintain and support large language model environments and related computing infrastructure for research, teaching, and administrative applications.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot server systems, open-source technologies, and machine learning frameworks used to support data processing, automation, model testing, and large language model workloads.
  • Assist with and maintain vendor relationships including contracts for cloud and Software as a Service solution.
  • Prepare and maintain a comprehensive Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) that includes contingency plans for recovering services and operations after incidents such as power blackouts, water damage, or structural building failures and contribute to the planning and development of disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Manage and test archived data files, systems, virtual machines and databases.
  • Identify, document, and manage backups including schedules, automation processes, and restore timelines.
  • Undertake projects such as performance monitoring and capacity planning to monitor the overall reliability and effectiveness of the computing systems and information processing architecture including storage area networks.
  • Diagnose, assess, circumvent, and find remedies for a variety of service incidents that deviate from planned or expected information system behaviour.
  • Exercise appropriate controls, monitor, and reconcile accounts.
  • Manage technical records using systems services, and external domain registrars.
  • Update and maintain a complete inventory of server and network hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Perform routine technical tasks related to the maintenance and administration of single sign-on authentication for server systems and services.
  • Provide expertise and practical assistance in delivering services that comply with established campus and industry standards.
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize problems and complaints to ensure that inquiries are successfully resolved. Escalate as appropriate.
  • Act as a consultative resource by providing information and assistance to others regarding the use of hardware, software, network, and other moderately complex information technology elements.
  • Carry out investigative work on a variety of requirements, information flow, and processes.
  • Elicit additional information from users to accurately diagnose problems.
