About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Quality Assurance, the Welding Engineer will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Take ownership of and maintain the welding program throughout the production facilities as per Walters welding policies and procedures in accordance with CSA W47.1, W59 and S16 Codes.
  • Manages the welding program including training, technology, weld design, welding procedure development, problem solving etc.
  • Create welding procedures and techniques tailored to specific materials and project requirements.
  • Select appropriate welding processes, procedures, and sequences as per project specifications.
  • Provide feedback to welders as needed to improve productivity and reduce weld defects.
  • Prevent and solve welding related issues.
  • Conduct studies and design, develop, and specify the processes, procedures and machinery to carry out welding work primarily for constructional steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Perform visual inspection on fabricated assemblies and completed welds as requested. Issue visual inspection reports as required and save them in the database.
  • Perform inspection at WFS and issue inspection reports as required.
  • Communicate with outside NDT inspectors and maintain all project related inspection documentation.
  • Determine the scope of NDT for each project.
  • Ensure all procedures are being followed throughout all departments at Walters and perform annual internal audits of the Quality Management System related to welding, documenting any findings and performing any follow-ups as required.
  • Assist in maintaining all procedures and forms per Quality Management System / ISO, CSA, and AISC.
  • Confirm all WPDSs are available to production.
  • Issue new WPDS as required and notify the QA Director when missing any WPDS.
  • Develop new PQRs and WPDSs, maintaining records and compliance with industry standards.
Work Location
  • Head office in Hamilton ON.
  • Travelling to fabrication shops, sub fabricators, and sites as needed.
Position Requirements
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Current P. Eng designation with 2 or more years of experience with designation.
  • Completion of CWB welding inspector certificate.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with steel fabricators.
  • Familiar with NDT inspection.
  • Experience working as a welding inspector with valid CSA W178.2, minimum level 1.
  • A team player who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
  • Ability to handle a variety of constituencies, juggle multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex, fast-paced environment with multiple changing priorities.
