The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) is a robust department, comprised of 12 level 3 critical care beds, and 4 level 2 step down beds, a Pediatric Critical Care Response team (PACE) and a newly formed Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, all which provide medical and surgical care to children and their families across southern Ontario.

The interdisciplinary team provides family centered care with a strong focus on evidence based best practice and continuous improvement initiatives. The unit provides specialized care to complex, surgical, oncologic, orthopedic, trauma and medical pediatric patient populations utilizing a collaborative approach. The PICU team engages in advanced therapies including continuous renal replacement therapy, therapeutic plasma exchange, and organ donation.

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse will work as part of, and are supported by, a multi-professional team within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). As a member of the multi-professional healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses. PICU nurses provide medical and surgical intensive care, working collaboratively in both the Level 3 PICU and Level 2 step-down areas which are fast-paced, complex and highly technologically integrated environments.

In addition to working within the unit, once the required experience is obtained, opportunities exist for the PICU Registered Nurses to complete advanced training to work within the Pediatric Critical Care Response Team (PACE), as well as become a member of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, which provides land transport for critically ill children across southern Ontario.

Schedule Work Hours

Rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications
  • Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or willing to complete within six (6) months of start date

  • Certificate in Pediatric Critical Care or equivalent

  • Minimum two (2) years recent nursing experience in a pediatric setting

  • Current pediatric critical care experience preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical high stress situations

  • Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric growth and development relating to critical illness, death and dying

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially in stressful situations

  • Demonstrated teamwork, organizational skills, problem-solving and conflict management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to be highly motivated and self-directed and responsive to an ever-changing environment and patient conditions

  • Experience engaging in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives
