McMaster Children’s Hospital, located in Hamilton’s west-end, is the second largest children’s hospital in Canada. We are home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health. The Diabetes-Endocrine service supports patient care in the areas of the pediatric emergency department, inpatients and the outpatient clinics.

Position Summary

The Pediatric Medicine Clinics at McMaster Children's Hospital provides outpatient care to over 100,000 pediatric patients from Hamilton and the surrounding area. It is a dynamic, fast paced environment comprised of numerous sub-specialty clinics that facilitate the unique health care needs of children, using a family centered model of care. As a member of this multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse (RN) will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric disease processes and related complex medical conditions to provide comprehensive nursing care and follow-up to children ages 0-17.

The RN is also responsible for facilitating clinic flow and assisting with the coordination of community services and supports.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days. Evenings and weekends as needed

Qualifications
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) preferred
  • Recent (2 years) experience, within the last 3 years, in the care for children with endocrine disorders preferably in a tertiary care outpatient setting
  • Pediatric vascular access skills including capillary blood testing.
  • Knowledge of pediatric diabetes and care of children with diabetes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing care and disease process of acutely ill children within the diabetes pediatric population; growth and development from neonate to teenager (normal and abnormal); family-centered care, family roles and structure; chronic and acute illness
  • Demonstrated skills in physical and psychosocial assessment specific to the diabetes pediatric population
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching with pediatric patients and their families and ability to work with the community
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with children and their families under stressful conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates leadership and delegation abilities and the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with members of the healthcare team
  • Ability to adapt to rapid change in patient condition workload status
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development
