Position

Description:

The Security Guard plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all clients, staff, residents, and visitors across Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre (HUCCHC) facilities. Responsibilities include monitoring the premises, enforcing safety protocols, conducting routine checks, and responding promptly and effectively to security incidents.

When assigned to the Residential Treatment and Recovery Facility, the Security Guard is additionally responsible for supporting resident safety through sign-in/sign-out procedures, regular wellness and security checks, and preventing the entry or possession of unauthorized substances, devices or individuals.

Working in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, the Security Guard applies trauma‑informed, non‑violent and respectful approaches to conflict resolution and crisis response, while upholding organizational values and contributing to a client‑centered welcoming environment.

Accountability:

The Security Guard reports to the Senior Manager, People and Operations, with overall accountability to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patrol interior and exterior areas to deter theft, vandalism, unauthorized access or disruptive behavior.
  • Monitor surveillance systems, alarm panels and access points to maintain awareness of security conditions.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of doors, windows, emergency exits and restricted areas.
  • Enforce safety protocols, including infection control measures and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Manage resident sign‑in and sign‑out in accordance with program guidelines and curfews.
  • Conduct routine room and common area checks for contraband or unauthorized substances.
  • Perform scheduled wellness and security checks on residents, documenting and reporting concerns to clinical or supervisory staff.
  • Monitor and control access to the residential treatment and recovery facility, ensuring only authorized individuals enter.
  • Respond promptly to security incidents, including behavioural escalations, medical emergencies or fire alarms.
  • Apply de‑escalation techniques and trauma‑informed approaches to manage conflicts or crises.
  • Collaborate with emergency responders (e.g., police, EMS, fire services) when required.
  • Accurately document all incidents and complete daily security logs.
  • Enforce organisational policies, including those related to visitor access, smoking and prohibited substances.
  • Support staff in handling difficult client or visitor interactions with professionalism and discretion.
  • Attend staff meetings, safety briefings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Report any safety hazards, equipment failures or unusual observations to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain a consistent, visible and professional presence to promote safety and reassurance.
  • Escort unauthorised individuals off the premises using respectful and policy‑aligned approaches.
  • Patrol parking areas to ensure vehicle safety and report unauthorised vehicles to municipal authorities.
  • Support evacuation drills, lockdowns and other emergency response protocols.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant security experience; experience in healthcare, shelter or recovery settings preferred.
  • Valid Use of Force Certification.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (required).
  • Commitment to anti‑Black racism, anti‑racism, anti‑oppression, anti‑discrimination, equity and a culturally grounded framework.
  • Training or experience in de‑escalation, crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Strong observational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
  • Knowledge of emergency response, fire safety and applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with diverse populations, including individuals affected by substance use, mental health challenges, homelessness or trauma (required).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must be available for flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, holidays and overnight shifts as required.
