Responsibilities
Provides support and services to women and gender diverse individuals temporarily residing within the Transitional Living Program of YWCA Hamilton, who are experiencing homelessness and/or are fleeing gender‑based violence. Supports include housing searches, coordination and accompaniment to unit viewings, liaising with prospective landlords, referrals, housing systems navigation support, coordination of needs as individual transitions into permanent housing.
Key Responsibilities
Works collaboratively with women and gender diverse individuals in the areas of housing, legal, education, employment and mental health to establish and maintain a plan to assist them with a safe and effective path to independence;
Conducts check‑ins of tenant needs and safety plans;
Applies the knowledge of the issues of trauma and the dynamics of gender-based violence to develop and implement effective support strategies;
Works within general rules, procedures and standards, referring issues or problems to supervisor;
Keeps records on day to day happenings, enters client information/daily events into an electronic data information system for reports and statistics;
Communicates, advocates and collaborates with community agencies (e.g. courts, legal services, housing) to provide resources and referrals to tenants
Offers systems navigation, crisis intervention, supportive counselling, referrals and advocacy;
Provides programming and co‑facilitates workshops focused on housing readiness (e.g. organizing, safety plans, anger management);
Works alongside Advocate and Peer Support teams to determine actions, case planning and goals for assigned clients;
Provides crisis intervention and counselling support for women and their children as needed;
Maintains high level of confidentiality when working with sensitive and personal client, employee and contract information;
Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
Performs other duties as required.
Unusual Working Conditions
Works 37.5 hours weekly within a temporary contract position and is required to be available for weekday, weekend and evening shifts as required to support tenant appointments and viewings.
Work environment may be unpredictable, and crisis‑oriented at times; regularly works in emotionally charged situations requiring resolution;
Qualifications
Equivalent to completion of 2 years college in social work or human services;
1 to 3 years’ experience working with crisis management, homelessness and violence against women settings;
