$27.53 /hour – $31.91 /hour (Base pay determined by experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions).
Hours of Work12‑hour rotating shifts, including both day and evening shifts.

The Barton‑Tiffany Emergency Shelter offers temporary, private, self‑contained units for individuals and 2‑person households, including pets, on a site owned by the City of Hamilton.
We are seeking Senior Emergency Shelter Support Workers to support residents in this innovative shelter environment. Senior Shelter Workers provide intensive, adaptive services to residents with complex barriers to finding and sustaining housing.
Responsibilities- Report to the Senior Program Manager and work with a multidisciplinary team to maintain a safe, hospitable environment.
- Support individuals, couples, and people with pets who are unhoused in a unique shelter setting.
- Provide housing‑focused case management services grounded in Housing First principles.
- Offer crisis intervention, strengths‑based supports, referral, advocacy, and supportive counselling to help clients achieve goals.
- Demonstrate professionalism; maintain excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Apply knowledge of homelessness, poverty, trauma, mental health issues, substance use, and gender‑based violence to provide safe, accessible, respectful care.
- Provide peer support, help with day‑to‑day shelter operations, and assist with training and onboarding of Shelter Emergency Workers as directed by the Senior Manager.
- Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Minimum 3 years of experience (or equivalent education and experience) in the housing and homelessness sector, focusing on residential settings.
- Diploma or degree in a social services‑related field.
- Advanced crisis intervention skills and in‑depth knowledge of mental health and addiction support.
- Experience working in a lower‑barrier, housing‑focused shelter environment with women, men, transgender, and non‑binary adults, both singles and couples.
- Demonstrated ability to provide services to individuals impacted by poverty, trauma, mental health issues, and substance use within harm‑reduction, trauma‑informed, anti‑racist / anti‑oppressive frameworks.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in an environment that accommodates pets.
- Valid driver’s licence is an asset.
- Fluency in a language other than English is an asset.
