Overview
Job Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technician at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for coordinating the workflow of phlebotomists in the Specimen Processing area, ensuring accurate and efficient transportation of lab supplies and specimens, and following regulatory guidelines for specimen handling. This role involves effective communication with NMHS staff, patients, and family members, providing excellent customer service, and addressing service recovery when needed.
The technician plays a vital role in reporting accurate laboratory test results and maintaining quality control standards.
Provides guidance to staff and reports to (not specified).
Responsibilities- Coordinate workflow of phlebotomists in the Specimen Processing area.
- Ensure accurate and efficient transportation of lab supplies, equipment, and specimens.
- Follow all laws and regulations for processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
- Adhere to regulatory guidelines for handling and processing of laboratory specimens.
- Utilize proper patient identification and specimen labeling procedures.
- Communicate effectively with NMHS staff, patients, family members, and customers.
- Use AIDET principles for customer service.
- Attend CARES training.
- Execute proper service recovery when necessary.
- Answer phone calls politely and efficiently.
- Work as part of the Pathology and NMHS employee team.
- Ensure department testing is reported in an accurate and timely manner.
- Assist in achieving departmental performance improvement goals.
- Document instrument monthly maintenance and quality control appropriately.
- Participate in continuing education to maintain and expand skills.
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes.
- Adhere to NMHS/NMMC policies, procedures, guidelines, and local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with CAP and CLSI standards.
- Associate’s Degree (Arts) as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program –
Required - MLTs credentialed prior to 2006 are grandfathered and do not need to complete the continuing education requirement –
Required - Medical Laboratory Scientist students in their fourth year with a completed clinical rotation may be hired into PRN MLT positions –
Required
- ASCP – Medical Technologist certification within 12 months after graduation –
Required - ASCP – Medical Technologist certification preferred; other national certifications considered –
Preferred - ASCP – Medical Technologist certification lapsed within 10 years: employee must retake exam –
Required - Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record –
Required
- 10+ years of experience in a clinic or hospital laboratory –
Required - Willing to consider 10 years of experience in lieu of certification –
Preferred
- Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills –
Required - Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens –
Required - Ability to prioritize and organize daily work demands –
Required - Evaluating processes and equipment for optimal performance –
Required - Effective communication –
Required - Provision of excellent service to internal and external customers –
Required - Ensuring quality control and routine maintenance –
Required - Extensive contact with Pathology Department and hospital staff, including physicians –
