Under the direction of the Senior Program Director and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the Great Miami Valley YMCA Association, the School Year Program Counselor works as part of a team of enthusiastic, energetic staff members. The role involves teaching to groups of a variety of ages ranging from elementary school to adults, hosting meals, curriculum development, discovery center feeding and cleaning, organizing evening programs, completing camp projects, maintaining the camp, and participating in staff trainings.
WorkSchedule
March 23 – May 29 (Seasonal). CCG also offers Spring and Summer employment.
Responsibilities- Teach the Outdoor Education Curriculum.
- Create a supportive cabin environment where campers feel respected and learn to respect one another.
- Facilitate and chaperone overnight groups.
- Lead evening activities such as a campfire and live history programs.
- Facilitate our challenge course and climbing elements with school-age and adult groups.
- Maintain program areas to be safe, clean, and exciting.
- Assist with camp projects.
- Update, create, and improve CCG’s Outdoor Education Curriculum.
- Complete weekly duties such as care of the Discovery Center and its animals, host meals, and oversee groups when they are doing their own programming.
- Other duties as assigned.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Work a variety of different days and times during each given week depending on the calendar, including overnights and weekends.
- Have a desire and willingness to work with children.
- Ability to work long days, multiple days in a row, including chaperoning overnight groups when needed.
- Adapt quickly and respond quickly.
- Demonstrate good judgment.
- Requires long periods of time outdoors.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with families, children, and other staff.
- Position may require bending, sitting, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Must be creative and enthusiastic to staff, campers, and families.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act quickly in an emergency.
- Ability to maintain emotional control and composure in turbulent, challenging and changing conditions.
