Summary of Primary Function / General Purpose of Position

The X‑Ray Technician performs digital X‑ray studies on patients per the orders placed by providers. The X‑Ray Technician is a multi‑skilled clinical professional who works within the scope of practice to assist in patient care under the direction of the provider.

Essential Job Functions
  • Safely performs provider‑ordered radiographic examinations, including proper patient positioning, immobilization, and radiation protection.
  • Sets up and adjusts supportive and immobilization equipment and devices as required by individual cases, handling patients with safety and professionalism.
  • Accurately documents patient encounters within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Determines and selects proper electronic and technical factors that safeguard patients, the x‑ray tube, and equipment.
  • Maintains clinical and administrative skills to meet patient care and daily operational needs, including specimen collection and point‑of‑care lab tests; may travel to other facilities and adjust work hours as directed by management.
  • Directs and practices sterile technique to prevent cross‑contamination.
  • Reports immediately any equipment malfunction, necessary adjustments, or repairs to the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties such as ordering supplies, lab/diagnostic tests, disposing of contaminated supplies, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and scribing as needed.
Licensing / Certification
  • ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification and registration – required.
  • State licensure – preferred (required if the job is performed in Virginia).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association, required upon hire.
Education

Associate’s degree from an ARRT‑accredited institute – preferred.

Experience
  • 1 year of radiation safety and patient care experience – preferred.
  • Experience with a Radiology Information System – preferred.
Training
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) – preferred.
  • PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) – preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Medical terminology and standard office equipment use – required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to assess patient status and provide age‑appropriate care in a high‑volume environment.

  • Adolescents (13‑17 years)
  • Infants (1‑12 months)
  • Adults (18‑64 years)
  • Pediatrics (1‑12 years)
  • Geriatrics (≥65 years)
Working Conditions
  • High‑stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • General office environment; exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • Exposure to limited hazardous substances or body fluids; humans’ blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions during off‑site travel.
  • Requirements for universal precautions, PPE, and infection control policies.
Physical and Shift Requirements
  • Manual dexterity, depth perception, and ability to perform repetitive arm/hand movements.
  • Manual lifting and carrying of patients (up to 100 lbs).
  • Shift work with potential for travel to off‑site locations.
