ONLY CITY OF HAMILTON POLICE OFFICERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY.
To establish an eligibility list for the POLICE DETECTIVE classification, a written competitive Civil Service examination will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Hamilton Police Department Training Room, 801 S 8th St, Hamilton, OH 45011. Applicants will be notified via email of the specific time of exam.
The duties of this class involve specialized police work in the investigation of criminal offenses and related assignments. Activities involve police duties in plain clothes and require the use of considerable discretion in the application of specialized skills, knowledge and abilities in the investigation and detection of criminal offenses.

Contract:
No person shall be eligible to take the examination unless he or she has served three (3) years beyond the successful completion of the one (1) year probation period in the rank of entry level Police Officer with the City of Hamilton prior to the actual date of the expiration of the current promotional list for the rank of Detective.
The scope of the examination will involve a written measure that will relate to the duties of the Police Detective class. The following source material will be used in the preparation of the examination:

A test score of seventy percent (70%) on the examination is the minimum passing grade. No credit for seniority will be added to an examinee's grade unless the applicant achieves at least the minimum passing grade on the exam without counting such extra credit. No credit for efficiency shall be added to test grades.
