This is skilled supervisory work in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical systems and equipment.

Employees are responsible for supervising and assisting in the activities of a crew of Line Workers and semi‑skilled workers engaged in the construction and maintenance of power lines. Since much of the work is done with high tension wires and equipment, Lines Crew Leaders must exercise considerable skill to protect crews from hazards. Work assignments are received from the Electric Distribution Superintendent in the form of charts, prints or verbal instructions, and the employee is responsible for obtaining necessary materials, assigning line workers to tasks and in carrying the job through to completion.

Work is reviewed through the submission of written job reports and occasional inspections of the superintendent.

  • Supervises, instructs and lays out the work of a line crew in constructing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground electrical systems and equipment, placing and removing crossarms, stringing wires, tapping wires; replacing crossarms and wires; and placing and replacing insulators and setting transformers.
  • Directs and assists in the installation of services and meters on customer's premises and directs the setting of poles, anchors, guides and the trimming of trees and branches.
  • Checks on methods used by the Line Workers to insure their safety and insures that protective devices and equipment are used where indicated.
    Directs and assists in the installation of measuring devices used in the field for power and demands classification surveys.
  • Keeps time and material records for each job.
  • Ability to complete a pole top rescue.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and tools used in power line construction and maintenance work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of the elementary principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical distribution and transmissions, and ability to apply this knowledge to work problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of first aid including artificial respiration.
  • Ability to layout, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to work from sketches, blueprints and oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to make time and material estimates on proposed installations and repair orders and to determine needed size and type of crew to efficiently complete the job.
  • Ability to climb poles and work at moderate heights with high tension wires.
  • Must be able to respond to a mandatory call when a qualified crew is necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and
  • Eight (8) years experience as a Journey Line Worker with at least five (5) years experience as Line Worker II or Line Worker III with the City of Hamilton; and
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
