Position OverviewThe middle school assistant coach reports to the athletic director and building principal and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing athletic activities assigned to them.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Report to the building principal and the Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
- Establish objectives for the athletic program and develop plans for their implementation.
- Promote participation and friendly competition, with winning records being secondary.
- Coordinate athletic activities with the school’s overall educational program.
- Provide vigorous activities to develop physical health and skills.
- Foster leadership, good citizenship, sportsmanship, self-expression, confidence, and discipline.
- Follow rules, regulations, and policies set by the Hammond School Board, Indiana High School Athletic Association, and other authorities.
- Assist in preparing budgets, hiring officials, managing equipment, and scheduling transportation.
- Follow procedures for injuries and ensure all participants have necessary physical examinations and documentation.
- Work with the Athletic Director on eligibility, equipment management, and compliance deadlines.
- Develop positive relations with parents, media, and the community.
- Attend staff meetings, clinics, and professional development activities.
- Establish rules for conduct, dress, and appearance to promote a professional environment.
- Expertise in the sport being coached.
- Understanding of participants’ physical, mental, and emotional needs.
- Ability to teach fundamental skills effectively.
- Good character, personality, and high moral standards.
- Effective communication skills with students, parents, staff, and officials.
- Knowledge of relevant rules and regulations.
- Availability to supervise activities beyond school hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Recommended annually by the principal and approved by the Superintendent; compensation per agreement.
- Annual performance evaluations.
