High School Assistant Boys Basketball Coach - Hammond Central HS
Overview
The high school assistant coach is responsible to the athletic director/building principal for the planning, coordinating, and directing of those specific athletic activities to which he/she has been assigned.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Be responsible to the building principal and the School Director of Physical Education and Athletics
- Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for implementing these objectives
- Develop his/her part of the athletic program to the utmost, recognizing that the main objective of the program is participation and friendly competition, with won-lost records of secondary importance
- Recognize athletic activities as an integral part of a well-balanced educational program; coordinate his/her athletic activities to avoid conflicts with the normal school program
- Provide vigorous activities that develop the physique, increase cardiovascular efficiency, and contribute to the development of physical skills
- Develop in students the principles of leadership and good citizenship through experiences in sportsmanship
- Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences
- Be knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and policies set by the Hammond School Board, the School Administration, the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and the Indiana Lake Shore Conference
- Know his or her part in preparing an athletic budget, selecting and hiring officials, requisitioning equipment and supplies, providing team transportation, arranging schedules, and other duties necessary for the efficient operation of an athletic program
- When injuries occur, follow the outlined procedures in Caring for An Injured Athlete (Handbook for Interscholastic Athletics, Athletic Injuries)
- Ensure that every participant has had the required physical examination and has the IHSAA Parent & Physician’s Certificate on file; no participant may practice or play until the certificate is signed and returned to the school
- Work closely with the Director of Physical Education and Athletics to check player eligibility, prepare eligibility lists, and submit IHSAA entry lists on time
- Work with the Director of Athletics to develop plans for issuing and receiving play equipment; co-responsible with the school athletic director for the condition and disposition of equipment
- Develop sound public relations with parents, newspapers, and radio personnel
- Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, and other professional growth activities as approved by the principal
- Cooperate with other athletic staff in establishing rules for conduct, dress, and appearance conducive to the development of well-rounded students
- Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of the sport being taught
- A thorough understanding of the participants physically, mentally, and emotionally
- Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport
- Desirable character and personality traits
- High moral standards
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members, and administration
- Thorough knowledge of the applicable rules and regulations
- Available to supervise activities beyond the school day
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Employment Information
- Personnel are recommended annually by the building principal and approved by the Superintendent. Compensation will be determined by the School City of Hammond agreement
- Performance of the job will be evaluated annually
