Job Description & How to Apply Below
A pioneering UK aerospace business developing and operating large autonomous fixed‑wing UAV platforms for logistics, humanitarian and defence missions is hiring an Electronics CAD Technician / Cable Assembly Draftsman on a permanent basis.
This is a documentation-led role focused on producing the controlled electrical and cable/harness drawing packs that enable reliable, repeatable manufacture across a growing fleet and next‑generation programmes.
The role
Working closely with electrical, mechanical and manufacturing engineers, you'll use Solid Works Electrical (and where required, 2D/3D support for routing/integration) to create and maintain:
Electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams and interconnection drawings
Cable, loom and wire-harness assembly drawings (wire IDs, lengths, routing, shielding, breakouts, connector/termination detail)
Connector pinouts, cable schedules, wire/from-to lists and BOMs
Manufacturing drawing packs and build/inspect/test/installation documentation
CAD libraries for symbols, connectors, cable types and standard components
You'll apply drawing standards, naming conventions and revision control, reviewing packs for completeness and manufacturability before release, and supporting build teams by resolving drawing queries and incorporating practical feedback.
Key responsibilities
Produce and maintain controlled electrical and harness documentation in Solid Works Electrical
Create detailed cable assembly drawings including routing, shielding, strain relief and labelling requirements
Maintain accurate schedules (pinouts, cable lists, wire lists, BOMs) and ensure part numbers/revisions are correct
Support prototype builds, investigations and engineering change requests (ECR/ECN)
Liaise across engineering, purchasing, quality and manufacturing to support the full product lifecycle
Maintain configuration-controlled records in document management / PDM systems
Essential skills & experience
Demonstrable background producing electrical CAD drawings / wiring documentation / cable-harness documentation
Competence with Solid Works Electrical (or comparable electrical CAD tools)
Strong grasp of schematics, wiring diagrams, pinouts, cable schedules and BOM structures
Practical understanding of cable/harness build: crimps/contacts, connector systems, wire gauge, shielding, sleeving, heat shrink, strain relief and labelling
High attention to detail (pin numbering, wire IDs, part numbers, revision control, cross-references)
Comfortable working with engineering drawing standards and document-release processes
Confident communicator with engineers and production/cable assembly technicians
Strong Excel skills (schedules/BOM management)
Desirable
Solid Works 3D / Solid Works Electrical 3D (routed harness design)
Experience in regulated sectors (aerospace/defence/automotive/industrial/robotics/medical etc.)
Knowledge of relevant standards (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620, AS/EN 9100, ISO 9001)
Experience with PLM/PDM/ERP or controlled document systems
Understanding of continuity/IR testing, inspection requirements, EMC/grounding/bonding/shielding and cable segregation
Personal attributes
Methodical, accurate, quality-focused
Comfortable managing multiple drawing packs and change control
Practical mindset-cares about "buildable" documentation
Can work independently, escalating technical queries appropriately
