Summary

The Hampton – VA Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician (Ophthalmology) to serve as the Chief of Surgery for Eye Care. The role requires basic management skills in planning, problem solving, leadership communication, and personnel management.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies are: ACGME‑accredited core specialty, AOA‑accredited core specialty, or other residencies with five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis only
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and require supervision for certain duties
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred Experience:

    2 years of supervisory experience and Board Certification or eligibility by the American Board of Ophthalmology
  • Physical Requirements:

    Applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Vision, color vision, hearing or speech may be required depending on duties; impairments may be compensated with appropriate aids
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until September 30, 2026 or until all positions are filled
  • Key responsibilities include monitoring quality of eye care, recommending equipment and supplies, developing regulations for patient safety, establishing continuing education programs, and supporting residency and externship programs
  • Serve as supervisor for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and eye technicians; ensure surgical scheduling and 24‑hour availability of care
  • Recruitment and relocation incentives may be authorized for highly qualified applicants at the supervisor’s discretion
  • Pay:
    Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases; 50‑55 days of paid time off per year; retirement includes federal pension and 401K with up to 5% VA contribution
  • Licensure:
    One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory
  • Work schedule:

    07:30 AM – 04:00 PM Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
