Mechanical Engineer, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the team in Hampton, Virginia, supporting the Maintenance Services group for the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract at NASA Langley Research Center. This position reports directly to the Maintenance and Reliability Engineer Manager.
ResponsibilitiesA Mechanical Reliability & Maintenance System Engineer provides the technical expertise on all matters of reliability engineering, assessment, and monitoring for all process equipment. Carries out reliability studies on existing equipment and recommends needed improvements to Operations management in the areas of equipment philosophies, strategies, and best practices for asset productivity. This position is the technical point of contact for all matters of equipment reliability and equipment failure related to mechanical type equipment.
This position focuses on enhancing equipment reliability through analysis along with some first response, day-to-day troubleshooting of failed equipment.
Typical responsibilities include:
Developing and implementing equipment asset plans using Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), and other reliability techniques.
Applying engineering theory and practice to perform physical failure analysis, determining root cause of equipment failures and conducting equipment performance evaluations.
Maintain equipment criticality rankings and risk assessments to prioritize maintenance activities
Partner with planners/schedulers, engineering technicians and technical writers to build detailed job plans, task steps, estimated labor hours, and required materials.
Work closely with operations to ensure equipment is operated within design limits and reliability expectations.
Provide engineering support during emergency or unplanned equipment outages to restore operation efficiently and safely.
Analyzing equipment trends & historical data to recommend and justify improvements to obtain lowest life cycle cost. Including but not limited to preventative maintenance program improvements.
Promoting consistency by standardizing equipment procedures & operations within area of responsibility and as requested by customer.
Supporting capital projects by participating in setting equipment criteria and specifications to optimize equipment/system reliability and life cycle cost.
Also providing technical support for fabrication, installation, and start-up of new critical equipment.
Participating in testing turn-around/shutdown teams providing input into needed equipment inspection and repair procedures.
Provide mentoring or technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians, or maintenance personnel.

Requisition QualificationsBS degree in Mechanical Engineering or in appropriate discipline and two (2) to five (5) years related engineering experience, or MS degree and one (1) to three (3) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D. and zero (0) to one (1) year of experience from an accredited engineering school and a working knowledge of maintenance and reliability requirements for mechanical systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience in Microsoft Office applications required.
Ability to troubleshoot and identify failure cause for Mechanical Systems
Failure analysis including preservation of evidence techniques
Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA)
Engineering design standards and their application
Reliability Engineers are encouraged to get CMRP certified (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional)

Must have sufficient mobility to enter all areas of test facilities; crawl, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, ability to work at elevated levels on platforms and scaffolding, etc. (20%). Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs.
