Overview
The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical related functions under the direct supervision of the physician and practice manager. Supports the clinic patient flow by assisting members of the patient care team and providing a wide range of health care services while promoting quality and safe care. May float to other practices as needed to support operational needs within the region.
WhatYou Will Do
- Maintain clinical competency by adhering to standard clinical expectations. Update, verify, and maintain patient records by interviewing patients and confirming the purpose of visit. Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining vital signs (including manual when devices are unavailable). Sanitize and prepare exam rooms before and after appointments. Administer medications and vaccines under physician supervision. Process prescription refill requests for approval and forward to pharmacies.
Maintain medical inventory and ensure exam rooms are stocked. Ensure equipment is in working order and perform preventive maintenance as needed. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, HIPAA, and OSHA standards. - Complete required competencies and education to maintain skill level for safe patient care.
- Serve as a liaison between physician and patient, providing support and comfort during visits and procedures. Demonstrate excellent customer service with timely responses by phone and electronic means. Manage patient expectations with clear explanations and effectively manage provider schedules. Assist patients with appointments, referrals, and access to care. Provide patient education per protocol and update after-visit summaries in the electronic health record.
- Demonstrate knowledge of lab procedures, including specimen collection, phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, and handling of ABNs as applicable. Process, package, and send specimens to the correct laboratory. Obtain preauthorizations when needed. Maintain point-of-care logs and document testing accurately in the EHR.
- Follow insurance carrier guidelines and Medicare regulations. Maintain knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding; obtain prior authorizations as needed. Schedule tests and specialist visits within network requirements.
- Support productivity goals to maximize facility resources and meet patient demand. Contribute to meeting quality measures for the organization.
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- Medical Assistant program graduate (Required)
- 1 year clinical experience (Preferred)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA (Upon Hire, Required) or
- CPR/BLS Certification – AHA/ARC/ASHI (Upon Hire, Required) or
- CCMA – NHA (Upon Hire, Required) or
- RMA – AMT (Upon Hire, Required) or
- MA – NCCT (Upon Hire, Required) or
- ARMA – AMTA (Upon Hire, Required)
