Position: Aerosol characteristics for air quality applications derived from active (LiDAR) and passive me[...]

Responsibilities

We are sharing this opportunity to engage a candidate in utilizing a diverse set of aerosol measurements from satellite-, ground-, and airborne-based systems to better understand their impact on air quality. NASA Langley Research Center and its Science Directorate are renowned for their extensive history of conducting long-term aerosol measurements and have compiled a comprehensive database that includes measurements from various aircraft campaigns, satellite missions, and complementary passive instruments like MODIS and VIIRS.

These resources can be leveraged to develop aerosol characteristics that enhance the accuracy and reliability of air quality models.

We specifically seek a candidate with experience in working with different LiDAR systems and retrieval methods for deriving the vertical profile of aerosols and improving estimates of the diurnal planetary boundary layer (PBL). This expertise will allow for synergistic utilization of passive / active measurements and enable improved aerosol characterization and PBL heights ultimately enhancing the accuracy of aerosol concentration estimations at the surface for air quality modeling and assessment.

The recent launches of TEMPO and GEMS satellites also provide additional opportunities for high temporal resolution measurements, allowing for the refinement of existing satellite data and more comprehensive aerosol characterization tailored for air quality modeling.

We are looking for a candidate who demonstrates a keen interest in aerosol science and can effectively apply these measurements for the betterment of society. Join us in advancing our understanding of aerosols and their impact on air quality to contribute to a healthier and safer environment.
