- Assists students while boarding and disembarking the school bus or auxiliary vehicle. Where required, secures each student with harnesses, seat belts, wheelchair locks, car seats, or other safety equipment as appropriate.
- Learns routes, schedules, and pick-up points and assists substitute drivers with directions.
- Assists driver in conducting evacuation drills.
- Assists driver with pre-trip safety inspections. Ensures special equipment, such as car seats, wheelchairs, straps, and tie downs are in proper working order and safely secured to the vehicle.
- Supervises student conduct to maintain discipline, submitting documentation to school officials and transportation supervisor as necessary.
- Assists driver in maintaining a clean, organized, and well-stocked vehicle interior.
- Assists driver in ensuring that all special education, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten students are released to an authorized adult.
- Performs daily post-trip inspection of the bus or auxiliary vehicle, walking the full length of the bus at the completion of each route, ensuring all passengers are dropped off and no personal belongings left behind.
- Maintains American Red Cross CPR and first aid certifications.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to push or pull up to 50 pounds; may be required to push or pull up to 30 pounds a day and frequently. Emergency situations may require exceeding these weight limits.
- Standing, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, and kneeling may be required while handling students and wheelchairs, and completing pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Ability to positively interact and communicate effectively with coworkers, students, parents, and school officials.
- Ability to maintain effective control over passengers to ensure student behavior is not a distraction to the driver.
- Ability and willingness to assist physically, mentally, and emotionally handicapped students in being transported to and from school.
