The interactive descriptions below reflect the two levels in the Environmental Health Specialist series:
- Environmental Health Specialist II
:
This is the first working level registered classification. Requires a Registered Environmental Health Specialist certification. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review lessen as the incumbent demonstrates skill to perform work independently. Incumbents at this level usually perform most duties of the III level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment.
Work is supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. - Environmental Health Specialist III
:
This is the full journey-level registered classification. Requires a Registered Environmental Health Specialist certification and specializes in the full range of environmental inspection and enforcement duties, working independently and exercising judgment. Occasional instruction is given for new or unusual situations. This class is distinguished from the Senior Environmental Health Specialist by the latter being more advanced and providing training to lower-level staff.
Positions II-level are typically advanced to III-level with certification and experience; III-level positions are filled by advancement from II-level.
