Experience Veterinary Assistant - Whippany Veterinary Hospital - New Jersey

Base pay range: $20.00/hr - $23.00/hr

Join our team at Whippany Veterinary Hospital as a compassionate and experienced Veterinary Assistant. We are seeking a dedicated individual with at least 2 years of experience working in a fast‑paced veterinary hospital who is confident in animal restraint, monitoring anesthesia, and recovering patients from surgical and dental procedures.

This is a full‑time position, which includes 1–2 Saturdays per month.

We are pleased to be able to provide a wide variety of veterinary services for animals in Whippany and the surrounding areas. We use the most modern equipment available and constantly stay abreast of the newest medical therapies and surgical treatments by providing continuing education for our entire staff.

Our hospital is a member of multiple organizations, including International Veterinary Association of Pain Management, Veterinary Hospital Management Association, American Institute of Medical Laser Applications, American Association of Feline Practitioners, American Animal Hospital Association, New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, and American Veterinary Association.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with various tasks, including animal restraint, medication administration, and sample collection.
  • Maintain a clean and organized clinic/hospital environment by disinfecting surfaces, sanitizing equipment, and cleaning kennels and cages.
  • Prepare examination rooms for appointments, ensuring they are well‑stocked and organized.
  • Greet and assist clients, helping them feel welcome and comfortable during their visit.
  • Provide compassionate care to animals and clients.
  • Provide support during medical procedures, including setting up equipment, holding animals, and monitoring their well‑being.
  • Collect, prepare and label laboratory samples (urine, fecal, and blood specimens) accurately, following proper protocols.
  • Assist with radiography (X‑rays) by positioning animals and operating equipment under the direction of the veterinary team.
  • Help educate clients on topics such as medication administration, preventive care, and post‑operative instructions.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of patient care, treatments, and interactions.
  • Keep up with laundry, washing dishes and maintaining hospital treatment, lounge, and ground areas.
  • Responsible for patient intake, exercising patients, and preparing animals for dismissal including bathing, brushing, administering medications, and obtaining discharge instructions.
  • Answer phone calls and learn basic reception functions as needed.
  • Practice fear‑free restraint and techniques.
  • Participate in maintaining a positive and collaborative team atmosphere.
The Ideal Candidate Will
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant in a busy, fast‑paced hospital setting.
  • Be comfortable with animal restraint of both cats and dogs, assisting in surgical prep, monitoring anesthesia, and managing patient recovery.
  • Thrive in a team‑oriented environment and remain calm and compassionate during high‑stress situations.
  • Possess strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude.
  • Be reliable, eager to learn, and committed to providing excellent patient and client care.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of veterinary assistant experience (required).
  • Previous experience working with animals, preferably in a veterinary setting.
  • Strong animal handling skills and comfort working with a variety of species.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow directions closely.
  • Basic understanding of veterinary medical terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, and work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
